Suryanar Kovil - Sun Temple

As per Hindu legend, Sage Kalava was suffering from serious ailments along with leprosy. He prayed to the Navagrahas, the nine planet deities. The planets were pleased by his devotion and offered cure to the sage. Brahma, the Hindu god of creation, was angered as he felt that the planets have no powers to provide boons to humans. He cursed the nine planets to suffer from leprosy and were sent down to earth in Vellurukku Vanam, the white wild flower jungle. The planets prayed to Shiva to relieve them off the curse. Shiva appeared to them and said that the place belonged to them and they would have to grace the devotees worshipping them from the place.This is the only temple where there are separate shrines for each of the planet deities. It is also the only temple among the nine planetary temples where Shiva is not the presiding deity.

Kailasanathar Temple - Moon Temple

The temple is one of the nine Navagraha temples of Tamil Nadu and is a part of the popular Navagraha pilgrimage in the state - it houses the image of Moon (called Thingal locally).The planets are believed to influence the horoscope computed based on time of one's birth and subsequently influence the course of life. Each of the planets are believed to move from a star to another during a predefined period and thus sway over an individual's fortunes. The Navagrahas, as per Hindu customs, are believed to provide both good and bad effects for any individual and the bad effects are mitigated by prayers. As in other Navagraha temples, the common worship practices of the devotees include offering of cloth, grains, flowers and jewels specific to the planet deity. The Chandiranaar temple (also called Kailasanathar temple or Thingalur Temple ) is a Hindhu temple in the village of Thingalur, 33 kilometres (21 mi) from kumbakonam on the Kumbakonam - Thiruvaiyaru road in the South Indian state of Tamilnadu. The presiding deity is Somo (moon). However, the main idol in the temple is that of Kailasanathar or Shiva. The temple is considered one of the nine Navagraha temples in Tamilnadu. Thingalur is the birth place of Appothi Adigal an ardent devotee of saint Thirunavukkarasar, though the temple has no assets related to the saint.

Vaitheeswaran Koil - Chevvai Temple

vaitheeswaran is a Hindhu Temple dedicated to the Shiva, located in the Indian State of Tamilnadu. Shiva is worshipped as Vaidyanathar or Vaitheeswaran meaning the "God of healing" and it is believed that prayers to Vaitheeswaran can cure diseases. Vaitheeswaran is a Tamil derivative from vaidya (Doctor) and Ishvara (God/Master). The presiding deity is Sri vaidyanathan, facing towards West whereas East side is the common one. He is the God of Healing. When pronouncing in Tamil, it sounds like "vaideeswaran". It is one of the nine Navagragha (nine planets) temples and is associated with the planet Mars (Angaraka).

Swetharanyeswarar Temple - Butha Temple

The temple is one of the nine Navagraha temples of Tamil Nadu and is a part of the popular Navagraha pilgrimage in the state - it houses the image of Budha (Mercury).The planets are believed to influence the horoscope computed based on time of one's birth and subsequently influence the course of life. Each of the planets are believed to move from a star to another during a predefined period and thus sway over an individual's fortunes. The Navagrahas, as per Hindu customs, are believed to provide both good and bad effects for any individual and the bad effects are mitigated by prayers. As in other Navagraha temples, the common worship practises of the devotees include offering of cloth, grains, flowers and jewels specific to the planet deity. Apatsahayesvarar Temple, Alangudi - GURU Temple

Apatasahayesvarar Temple, Alangudi Guru sthalam or Tiru irun Poolai is a hindhu temple dedicated to Shiva  located in the village of Alangudi in the valangaiman taluk of Thiruvarur disct, Tamilnadu, India. Shiva is worshipped as Apathsahyesvarar, and is represented by the Lingam. His consort Parvati is depicted as Elavarkuzhali. The presiding deity is revered in the 7th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Thevarem, written by Tamil saint poets known as the Nayanmars  and classified as paadal petra sthalam.

The temple complex covers two acres and it houses a five tier gateway tower known as gopurams, one facing the Apathsaheswarar shrine and other towards North. The temple has a number of shrines, with those of Apathsaheswarar and his consort Elavarkuzhali being the most prominent.

Agniswarar Temple, Kanjanur - Sukra Temple

Kanjanoor Agneeswarar Temple is the Shukra Navagrahasthalam, associated with Lord Shukra or Planet Venus. Lord Shiva as Agneeswarar and Goddess Parvathi as Karpagambal forms the presiding deities of this temple. Unlike other Navagraha Temples, the main deity of Kanjanoor Agneeswarar Temple, Lord Agneeswarar resides here in the form of Lingam and depicts Lord Shukra. One can find no separate shrine for the Navagraha, Shukra here. This is because Lord Shiva Himself is worshipped as Shukra at this temple. Kanjanoor Agneeswarar Temple is renowned as the Parihara Sthalam for ‘Shukra Dosha’. Worshipping Lord Shukra or Planet Venus at this temple is believed to bestow wealth and prosperity in one’s life.

Despite being born to a Vaishnava family, Sudarsana became an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. Not happy with Surdasana’s devotion to Lord Shiva, His father Vasudeva, and the villagers tried to convince him of the superiority of Vaishnavism. Regardless, nothing moved Sudarsana from his devotion to Lord Shiva and he used to visit Kanjanoor Agneeswarar Temple despite the fierce opposition from everyone. His father then banished him from his house. But Sudarsana went to Kanjanoor Agneeswarar Temple and slept there. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before Sudarsana as Dakshinamurthy and initiated teachings of Shaivism. He also named Sudarsana as Haradatta Sivachariyar.

Tirunallar Dharbaranyeswarar Temple - Saniswaran Temple

Thirunallar Saniswaran Temple is a very famous shrine for Lord Shani or Planet Saturn. Situated in Thirunallar in the Karaikal district of Pondicherry, it is one of the well-known Navagraha Temples in Tamilnadu and is popular as Shani Navagrashalam. The main deities of Thirunallar Saniswaran Temple are Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvathi who are worshipped here as Darbaranyeswarar and Bhogamartha Poonmulai Amman. Thirunallar Saniswaran Temple is located in Thirunallar in Karaikal district of Pondicherry. The place Thirunallar was earlier known as Dharbaranyam as it was originally a forest with a flourishing growth of Dharba grass. The Shiva Lingam enshrined at Thirunallar Saniswaran Temple still contains the impression of the Dharba grass which stands as a testimonial fact to the truth. Tirunageswaram Naganathar Temple - Rahu Temple

Thirunageswaram Sri Naganathaswamy Temple is the very famous Rahu Stalam in Tamil Nadu, dedicated to Lord Rahu. Rahu Bhagavan is worshipped at this temple along with his two consorts Nagakanni and Nagavalli. Usually, in other temples, Rahu Bhagavan is seen with a serpent face but here, at Sri Naganathaswamy Temple, Lord Rahu is seen with a human face which is its unique future. The presiding deity of Sri Naganathaswamy Temple is Lord Shiva who is worshipped as Lord Naganathaswamy and represented by the Lingam. His consort, Goddess Parvathi is depicted as Giri Gujambika with Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswathy by her side. Sri Piravi Marundeeswarar Temple - Ashwini Nakshatra

Sri Piravi Marundeeswarar Temple is in Thiruthuraipoondi near Thiruvarur district. This temple is an exclusive one for Ashwini starrers. There is a belief that if Ashwini nakshatra people visit this temple and do Parihars(Special offerings) to Piravi Marundeeswarar all their sins will vanish and they will have a new birth.The unique feature of this temple is that Lord Shiva is facing the west which is rare and it is very different from the normal tradition. They believed that Lord Siva attained his Godly character because of their Yagas. So in order to teach them a lesson Lord Siva came in disguise as a handsome beggar, mesmerized by his handsomeness all the Rishies followed him madly, like adding fuel to the fire God Vishnu too came in disguise as a glamorous lady, again these Rishis went mad behind her. After some time they realized that they have been fooled by the both and so they planned to destroy them with the help of an elephant. At this point Lord Siva revealed himself and killed the elephant and also the pride of Rishies. This is the legend behind this temple.

Nalladai Sri Agneeswarar Temple- Bharani Nakshatra

Agnishwarar Temple, located at Nalladai in Nagapatnam District in Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is around 15 km from Mayiladuthurai. The temple is popularly known as Nalladai Sivan Temple. There are three entrances with majestic Kopuras (Towers). It is a bygone temple built in 1147. The sanctum sanctorum has Lord Siva surrounded by water in order to cool down the heat from the idol. This is one among 27 Nakshatra temples. Sri Kathra Sundareswarar Temple - Karthikai Nakshatra

The Kathra Sundareswarar temple is located in a place called Kanjanagaram in Nagapattinam district. The main god of this temple is Lord Shiva and he graces as Suyambumurthy and faces the West. The Lord is known by the name Kathra Sundareswarar and the Goddess is known by the name Thunga Bala Sthanambigai. Manakkanjarar was one of the 63 Nayanmars and he was born in this place. It is also believed that the 6 Krithika Maidens who took care of Lord Muruga during his childhood were also born here. This is one among 27 Nakshatra temples. Karthikai starers have certain unique characters. They normally have a strong sense of responsibility and they would like to be independent. They have extraordinary talents and intelligence but they do not have a steady mind to focus on one thing. Thirupadagam Sri Pandava Thoothar Perumal Temple - Rohini Nakshatra

The temple for pandava doota perumal (Sri krishna) is situated in the heart of Kanchipuram (periya kanchi), very near Ekamranatha temple. The main sanctum enshrining pandava doota perumal is very large, in keeping with the huge size of the deity. It is rectangular in plan with a very high barrel-shaped roof known as bhadra vimana. The original shrine was probably built of brick and later remodelled in stone during the chola period, about the 11th-12th centuries . The maha-mandapa in front of the main shrine also belongs to the chola age as seen from the pattern of the pillars. Adi Narayana Perumal Temple is located at Enkan near Thiruvaur in Tamil Nadu. The unique aspect of the temple is that murti of Bhagavan Vishnu worshiped in the temple is sitting atop Garuda. Another famous ritual that was performed in this temple is the special pooja that was done for getting a Baby Boon. Adiramapattinam Sri Abhaya Varadeeswarar Temple -Thiruvathirai Nakshatra

This is a very ancient temple that was built nearly 2000 years ago. In early days, this place was known as Tiru Adhirai Pattinam (after the name of the star- Thiruvadirai). Later, King Adhiveerarama Pandian belonging to Tiruvadhirai Nakshathira, an ardent devotee of Lord Abhaya Varadeeswarar, carried out many renovations in the temple. So the name of this place changed to Adhi Veera Raman Pattinam (after the name of the king). Over a course of time, it became Adirampattinam. This temple is considered as more auspicious for the people who are born on Thiruvadirai Nakshathira. The most important significance of this temple is that Lord Shiva in the main Garbhagraha of this temple bestows His blessings to His devotees with His Three Eyes. The Goddess is known as Sundaranayaki. She faces the sea and so she is also called as ‘Kadal Paartha Nayaki’. It is also popularly said that the Siddhas are offering their prayers here invisibly. The greatness of this temple is said in the hymns that are sung by Thirugyanasambandar and Sundarar and it is one of the Paadal Petra Sthalam. *This temple is closely associated with the Birth Star Thiruvadirai. So people who are born in this Nakshathira would get relieved from all sorts of trouble if they offer prayers to Lord Abhaya Varadeeshwarar. Sri Athitheeswarar Temple- Punarpoosam Nakshatra

Athitheeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Vaniyambadi Town in Vellore District of Tamilnadu. The shrine is believed to be more than 1000 years old. Thirundhuthevankudi Sri Karkadeswarar Temple- Ayilyam Nakshatra

Lord Shiva in the temple is a swayambumurthy. There are two Goddesses in the temple against one normally seen in Shiva temples. They are in separate shrines. There is a hole on the body of Shivalinga made by a Karkadam –Cancer , a sea creature and an injury scar caused by Indira.Each nakshatra or birth star has a temple dedicated to it. Maham star temple: Also, the sage Bharadwaja is one of the five sages who installed Mother Meenakshi in Madurai. His reputation is beyond the power of words. Despite high power gained through intense penance, the sage was all humble in nature. The two Peetas at the entrance of the temple are said to be Bharadhwaja himself sitting there to have the touch of the feet of devotees on his head. Sri Hari Theertheswarar (Arangulanathar) Temple - Pooram Nakshatra

Hari Theertheswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thiruvarankulam in Alangudi Taluk in Pudukottai District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is Hari Theertheswarar / Arangulanathar and Mother is Brahadhambal / Periya Nayagi. The Temple was called as Kulothunga Chozheeswaram during ancient times. The temple is dedicated to Pooram star. Those born in this star are advised to visit the temple as often as they could, on their annual star day, monthly star days, wedding days and Aadi Pooram day. Chola king Kalmashapadan was much annoyed as he did not have a progeny even after long years of marriage. He appealed to Sage Agasthya who advised him to go to Tiruvarankulam and worship the Shivalinga. The king came to this place but could not find the Shivalinga and sought the help of shepherds. They told him that people carrying puja materials through this way fall down at a particular spot. The king dug the spot when the earth began to bleed. The Shivalinga was there.
